Ira was the son of John and Lawsie West Hurt. He married Sarah Frances Warden on the 26th day of March 1853 in Raleigh County, Virginia (which is now West Virginia).

Sarah Frances Warden was born on November 27, 1834, the first of Thomas and Martha's children to be born in Fayette County, Virginia. She married Ira Hurt on March 24, 1853, in Raleigh County, Virginia. Ira (1834-1915) is son of John and Lawsey West Hurt. Sarah Frances and Ira lived on Stonewall Road in Piney View. They are both buried in the Ira Hurt Cemetery at the end of Stonewall. Sarah Frances died of pneumonia on June 17, 1927. They had 12 children: 1. Arlisha Smith, 2. Emily Jane "Emma" Hunt, 3. Elizabeth Marie "Lizzie" Teel, 4. Thomas Jefferson, 5. Julia Ann "Annie" Coleman, 6. William Alfred "Bub", 7. Stuart Laing, 8. Sarah Amanda, 9. Millard Fillmore, 10. Ira "Deet," 11.
