Ellis Clardy Smith was born on October 30, 1900 in Montgomery County, Tennessee, the son of Edward Lewis Smith (1875–1942) and Mary Ellen (Clardy) Smith (1882–1900).
He was married on November 13, 1921 to Lillian "Lucile" Moss (1904–1980), who was born in Todd County, Kentucky.
A farmer who was living at 1030 Edge Hill Drive in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, Ellis was 65 years old, married and had Rheumatoid arthritis and pneumonia when he had a heart attack and died on July 28, 1966 at Clarksville Memorial Hospital, where he had been for three weeks. Burial was the next day in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Clarksville.
