Enlisted in the 7th IND, Co. G on 9/2/1862. According to the obituary, he was captured along the Weldon RR and sent to Libby prison. From there he was transferred to Belle Isle where disease almost took his life. In Dec 1864 he was traded in a prison swap and nursed back to health. Amos then joined the 20th IND, Co. C and served until the end of the war.

He married Nancy Johnson in 1865 and had five children. She died in 1876 and he remarried to Sarah J Evans on 3/17/1878. They had 9 children.
