Benjamin was the son of Zenas Fickling (1822-1880) and his wife, Emma Thrapp (1821-1900). A photo we have says he was born in 1847. His gravestone says he was born in 1848.
In 1851, 1861, and 1871, Benjamin lived in Westminister, London, England, in Knightsbridge Hamlet, All Saints Parish. In 1861 his address was 3 Rutland Mews. In 1871 he was living with his parents at the Ennismore Arms (in Ennismore Mews), which his father, Zenas, owned.
Benjamin married his wife, Mary, about 1877. They had three children: Robert Marshall (c1879-1950); Frances Mary (c1880-1950); and, Edwin Llewellyn (c1882-1943).
In 1881, Benjamin lived in Chelsea, London, England in the Christchurch Hamlet, All Saints Parish.
In 1891 he lived in Barnes, Surrey, England, on Bridge Road in Holy Trinity Parish. The 1901 and 1911 census also show him living there.
In later years, Benjamin's occupation is usually listed as a "Licensed Victualler," like his father. After his father's death he eventually took over the Ennismore Arms.
