Aloys Conrad Gruber, second child of Joseph Gruber and Edith Mary Beau, was born in Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA. He was the younger brother of Ethel Ann Gruber. According to his cousin he weighed only a little over a pound at birth, having to spend quite a while in the Modesto Hospital. This was during the war when lights were turned off at night, but he light in his incubator was left on to keep him warm.

Those who knew him well knew him as Connie, extremely intelligent with a Mensa IQ, well read, and one of the best intellects in the Stockton Diocese with more than 10,000 books at the time of his death.

He attended St. Stanislaus School, the first graduate to be ordained a priest. Conrad graduated from St. Joseph's College in Mountain View and completed his education at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park. He was ordained May 6, 1967 at Annunciation Cathedral in Stockton and served at Our Lady of Fatima, Modesto from 1967 - 1973. He was the Pastor at St. Luke's, Stockton 1982 - 1996 and Pastor at St. Mary of the Annunciation, Oakdale from 1996 - 2011. He retired in 2011 and continued to live in Oakdale until his death.

Often called Father Groovy during his early years because of his Afro hairstyle, Birkenstock sandals, and sense of the sixties and seventies. It was during these early years at Our Lady of Fatima while working with the youth group and young adults he created a successful Folk Mass and Home Mass program.
