Death of a Pioneer

Melzar Osborn, a pioneer of California and Arizona, and prominently identified with the early development of Marin County, died in San Rafael Sunday morning at the age of 82 years. He was one of the most active of the sturdy band of early settlers who laid the foundation for the present prosperity of the county.

Melzar Osborn was a native of Springfield, MA, which city he left to join the procession of gold-hunters for California. He reached this State in 1850, and after 3 years of mining in Shasta County, he moved to Tomales, this county. He was president of the Board of Supervisors from 1867 to 1871. While holding this office, he was instrumental in having bonds to value of $60,000 issued by the county for road improvement after W.J. Miller had induced the Legislature to authorize the measure.

In 1876 Osborn went to Arizona, where he became interested in mining development. He remained a resident of the territory until his death, making only occasional visits to this city. A month ago he came here to visit his niece, who is the wife of County Assessor Ira H. Parks. His death was due to old age. His wife died 30 years ago, and he leaves no children. His surviving relatives besides Mrs. Parks are 3 brothers in the East and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Alden, who resides in Los Angeles.
