Kenneth James Reid - age 95, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa and a resident of Mobile for over 50 years passed away Monday, November 11, 2013.
Mr. Reid immigrated with his parents to Florida at an early age, and later graduated with a business degree from the University of Tampa and pursued a Master's in Business at Harvard Business School until the outbreak of World War II. He served the duration of the War in the Army Air Force, and afterward moved to Mobile. Mr. Reid was employed at Southern Industries Corporation in Mobile for over 30 years before retiring as Sr. Vice President and Comptroller.
He was very active in numerous civic and charitable organizations having served as a board member for many of them including the Alabama Kidney Foundation, Y.M.C.A., and the Salvation Army, and was a board member and past President of America's Junior Miss Pageant and America's Junior Miss Foundation. Mr. Reid was an active member of Spring Hill Presbyterian Church having served as a Deacon and Elder member of the Session.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margarette Lavender Reid, and his sister, Margaret Reid Duncan of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is survived by his sons, Kenneth James Reid Jr., M.D., John Robert Reid (Diane); granddaughter, Holley Margarette Reid Murray; niece, Evanell Desmarais (André); and many other relatives and friends. A special thanks to the staff of Westminster Village Independent Living Life Care community in Spanish Fort where he resided for the past 10 years.
Graveside services were held in Old Springhill Cemetery in Mobile on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 11:30 A.M. Memorial donations may be offered to the American Lung Association or the Westminster Village Foundation. Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com.
