LIFE OVERVIEW
Hon. Charles Green Rich Vinal, of Middletown, Secretary of State, was born January 14, 1840, at Monroe, Maine. In 1854, his family moved to Deep River. He is seventh in descent from John Vinal and Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. Nicholas Baker, who settled in Scituate, Mass, in 1636. He was graduated from Wesleyan University in 1861 and entered a law office to study for the bar, but the war interfered with his plans for four years. In 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War, he served as First Lieutenant in the Twenty- forth Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. In 1865, he was appointed clerk of the superior court for Middlesex County. When he retired from this post, his brother Frederic took over, but died soon after, he then, was reappointed. Mr. Vinal has been Mayor of Middletown (1884), Town Treasurer (1879), Judge of Probate (1867 - 1868), and for the past thirty-six years, Clerk of the Superior Court for Middlesex County. He represented the twenty- second District in the Senate (1896-1898). He was re-elected in 1899 and served as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. In 1900 he was elected Secretary of the State, he served two terms, from 1901 to 1905. Mr. Vinal married in 1865 to Melissa Amelia Hotchkiss, daughter of the Ex- Lieutenant Governor, Julius Hotchkiss and member of the Fortieth Congress. He is a member of St. John's Lodge , No. 2 F. and A.M., and Mansfield Post, No. 53, G.A.R.
In his younger years, he was a Democrat, but after the Civil War, he became affiliated with and was active in Republican party politics. Mr. Vinal passed in his home in Middletown.
