Clara married W.F. Hawkins. W.F Hawkins died in either 1922 or 1923 when their only child William Deane Hawkins was 8 years of age.

After W.F. Hawkins death, Clara supported her son by teaching at the El Paso Technical Institute. She alone raised a young man who became one of America's most heroic warriors.

Clara's son died at the Battle of Tarawa on 21 Nov 1943. William was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a White House ceremony. On 1 August 1944, "20-30 Club" sponsored Clara in a trip to Washington D.C where she was presented the medal. Medal of Honor Citation

In May of 1946, Clara declined to accept the US Governments offer to move her son's remains back to the US for burial. She felt her son should remain buried near the Tarawa airfield which had been named after her son. However, according to Harry E. Maude, British resident commissioner, all American remains at Tarawa had been removed by 31 Dec 1946, the Army Grave Registration Service had cleared the cemetery site of all crosses and markers and the cemetery plot reverted to a native owner who eventually planted coconut trees. According to the Quartermaster General, Washington D.C, Williams remains were kept at Mausoleum 1, Schofield Barracks, Honolulu until he was finally laid to rest on 10 Jan 1949 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Clara never remarried.

Siblings:
Luther H. Moon
Isaac Deane Moon (1885-1984)
