He was born in Granby, the son of Allen and Emmeline (Loomis) Barnes.

He enlisted on August 2, 1862 in Company E. 16th Ct. Regiment Infantry. He was mustered in August 24.

He was wounded in action on September 17, 1862, and discharged on disability as a result in October of 1863. He subsequently died from these wounds on June 4, 1864 at Mt. Pleasant Hospital, Washington D.C.

He was the husband of Adelaide Roberts.

Also a Private, Company I, 2nd Regiment, Connecticut Heavy Artillery, mustered in Jan. 5, 1864, died Jun. 14, 1864, at Mount Pleasant Hospital.
