Son of Joseph KARKLINSKY (1818-1904) and Chaneh Sheina "Jennie" Karklinsky (1822-1904), John Jacob Zelig Karklinsky changed his surname to "Broida" when he immigrated to the US at age 17-18. One source states arrival in Pennsylvania, but he may have lived in New York for a time after immigration, as a "rag picker." He married Gitel in 1881 and they were living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by 1882 when their first son was born. John worked in fine men's clothing stores, and had a business with a partner called "Broida & Yourkansky;" they were jobbers of notions.

In 1891 their two year old son Samuel died after having membranous croup for one week.

By 1892 John was working in "dry goods" in Pittsburgh. John, Gitel, and two of their sons moved to Denver, Colorado, by 1900- perhaps to start a new business, or possibly to improve Gitel's health, as she acquired tuberculosis. John was working in men's furnishings in Denver, but Gitel died in 1901. Her body was returned to Pittsburgh for burial; John and the two boys returned as well.

John was selling hosiery in 1903 in Pittsburgh, and took out a marriage license on 14 April 1904 in Jefferson County, Ohio to marry Fannie Rubenstein. They lived in Pittsburgh through at least 1910, but in 1917 John was listed in the St. Louis City Directory. (He did have family in St. Louis.) Around 1920 John and Fannie emigrated to Tel Aviv, Israel, where they later died.
