Fought for the Union in the Civil War. Coal merchant, thoroughbred horse breeder and racer. Horse race track owner.

Capt. Brown owned one of the most successful racing stables of his time. Among his most prominent horses were Broomstick, Troubadour, Conjuror, and the very fast colt Agile who in 1905 won both the Kentucky Derby and the Tennessee Derby.
