By the death of Samuel Barnum, long a resident of Newtown, another name is stricken from the list of the aged. Mr. Barnum, whose home for years has been with his son-in-law, Postmaster William B. Sniffen of Sandy Hook, was taken to Wolf Pits, Bethel, about a month ago and has since been with his son, Lewis Barnum. Throughout his long life, Mr. Barnum had enjoyed excellent health, but has been gradually failing as his years increased and, for a couple of years, he has been unable to walk. Mr. Barnum's death, Saturday, was, therefore, not unexpected. The remains were taken from Wolf Pits to Stratford, Monday and the funeral was from the Congregational Church. Mr. Barnum, who was born In Danbury in 1797, learned the shoemaker's trade and followed it, both there and in Stratford, where he moved in early life, until the failure of the shoe trade, when he took up painting for a number of years. His wife, once Miss Harriet Curtis, died many years ago and Mr. Barnum, after a few years in Michigan made his home with Mr. Sniffen. Of his children, all but Mrs. Mary Cook of Stratford who died about seven years ago, survive: Catherine (Mrs. Valentine of Florida), Lewis S. Barnum of Bethel, Henry (a missionary in Constantinople), Harriet (Mrs. W. B. Sniffen), William M. of New York. Mr. Barnum has one living brother, Dea. M. S. Barnum, formerly of Kent, now of Clifton Springs. (The Newtown Bee, Friday, November 7, 1890)
