The Ithaca Journal Obituary 16 JUN 2005 Ithaca, Tompkins, New York

DRYDEN: With the death of 18-year-old Christopher Ackley, Dryden Central School District faculty and staff prepared for the last day of classes Wednesday by making counselors and staff available to students.
"We talked about having counselors and other staff members available when students arrived," said Mark Crawford, superintendent of Dryden schools. "Those students who wanted to speak with staff members were able to do so."
Ackley was killed when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving on Lake Road Tuesday. It struck a utility pole.
Scott Adams, 12, Ackley's passenger, was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City after sustaining lacerations as well as head and chest pain. Hospital officials declined to discuss his condition.
"The school community is just devastated by this sad news," Crawford said. "Our sympathy and most sincere condolences go out to Pat and Allen Ackley and his grandmother."
Crawford said Ackley had received awards from Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services for diesel mechanics Ö a program he had been one final exam from finishing. Ackley had planned to major in automotive technology in college after graduating from Dryden High School in the upcoming academic year.
His parents were fixtures at swim team events where Ackley had been a co-captain.
"His mom and dad were at every swimming event, and his mom was at every practice Crawford said.
Following in the footsteps of his parents, Ackley had been involved in the Dryden community both in and out of the classroom. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, received the Hands of Christ Award from the Diocese of Rochester, and, like his parents, became a volunteer firefighter for the Dryden Fire Department.
Fire chief Ron Flynn said grief counselors would be made available to firefighters.
"Some of the things we get concerned about here is will the kids be able to concentrate," said Nancy Rosen, director of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service. Rosen said the agency had not provided counselors for the day but did check in with school officials.
"It's always difficult when things happen at the end of the school year because the school community is always so strong and then they're not there," Rosen said.
The trauma can sometimes change a person's eating and sleeping habits, Rosen cautioned.
"Parents need to get as much nutrient and sleep into them as they can," Rosen said. "When we experience a loss like this, we can feel very weak and tired."
Young children and teenagers grieve differently.
"For younger kids, the concept of death is not very firm and so sometimes they continue talking about someone as if they're still alive," Rosen said. "Understand that the child will understand death through time and not to force it.
"For teenagers, the reality of death is more real, and we need to help them not lose perspective Ö to help understand that this kid died young and not most kids die young so they need to stay engaged in the world."
Viewing hours for Christopher Ackley are scheduled from 4-9 p.m. Friday at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden. The funeral Mass celebration is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18 at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 375 George Road in Dryden.
Dryden Central School District officials have planned a memorial service for 1 p.m. Monday, June 20.
