The only documentation found for the place of Lewis Arnold's birth as of the date of this writing in December, 2013 is the Civil War Muster Roll indicating his birth in Ovid, NY. The place of birth in this memorial is taken from that record.

That muster roll, a copy of which has been posted here, and the New York, Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865 both state that he enlisted at Lodi, New York on August 28, 1862 and mustered on September 14, 1862 in the 148th New York Infantry with a rank of Private. The documents indicate that his occupation was "wagon maker" and he was age 21, married 3 years.

There is a discrepancy between his stated age in those documents and the year of his birth in 1844 inscribed on his grave marker since an age 21 implies birth in 1841. He would have been 18 years old in August and September, 1862 - suggesting that either he overstated his age by 3 years or the year 1844 on the grave marker is erroneous. No record of the actual date of his birth has been found. Perhaps he misrepresented his age to the Army. No record of his marriage has been found either, suggesting that he may have misrepresented his marital status, as well.

Lewis A. Arnold was a Second Lieutenant when he died at the Jackson Barracks, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The cause of death was "Yellow fever" according to the U.S., Registers of Deaths in the Regular Army, 1860-1889, Volume 2 entry for Lewis A. Arnold. The remarks column in that record for Lewis Arnold contains the entry "B. A Clements Surg. USA" - an apparent reference to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Bennett A. Clements, surgeon with the United States Army. This writer infers that Lt. Col. Clements was the physician who certified the cause of Lewis Arnold's death.

It appears that Lewis A. Arnold likely is not buried at St. Mary's but is, instead, interred at "Monument Cemetery," now known as the Chalmette National Cemetery in Chalmette, Louisiana. It is not clear that he was moved to St. Mary's after being interred at Chalmette. One of these sites, probably this one at St. Mary's, is a cenotaph.
