McDonald, Kan., resident Harold Leonard Mayfield, 77, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He had formerly been a resident of Goodland.

Harold was born Aug 11, 1931, in Benkelman, Nebr., the son of a farmer, Leonard Ernest and his wife Velma Pearl (Harper) Mayfield.

In 1949, he graduated from Atwood High School.

He served his country in the United States Air Force. During his tour in Europe, he was awarded a medal of bravery for his courage during a mission which involved the air transfer of nuns and children in Germany.

In 1958, he married Roberta (McCarty) Most. To this union, five children were born.

He was a master mechanic. Engines of any kind were no match for his God-given talent to repair what was broken.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother Lloyd Mayfield.

Surviving family includes two sons Stephen Mayfield of Denver, Colo.; Shawn W Mayfield of McDonald; three daughters Deidre D Brantley of Atwood; Monique R Mayfield of Thornton, Colo.; and Deserie A Mayfield of Denver; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister Elaine Stubbs and her husband Larry of Edgerton, MO.

The memorial service was Monday, April 20, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with Dr Chet Ross officiating. He was buried at the Atwood Cemetery, after a private family service.
