Cleo Fern Kimmerling was the youngest of seven children born to Wreatha Baker and Ray Kimmering. She grew up in numerous small Kansas and Nebraskan farm communities during the great depression. She was very sharp, well read, and highly intelligent. She did very well in school, receiving excellent marks. She had amazing penmanship, was a gifted artist, and a voracious reader. Often reading as many as 3-4 books at the same time. She enjoyed bowling, archery, music, westerns, and sewing. She was a longtime member of the Lutheran church. After a courtship that included hunting & fishing trips, she married James S. Lance, Jr. on May 13, 1950 in San Diego, California and together they had three children. She worked as a secretary and accountant for a number of years before working for Kaiser Hospital in an executive capacity for over 25 years. She retired to a beautiful solid cedar home, she helped build together with her husband Jim, in the eastern San Diego mountains of Julian, overlooking the Anza-Borrego Desert. She loved all her pets, was a fantastic cook, and kept a meticulous home. Standing only 5'-2" tall, she was a strong and independent spirit that accomplished anything that she set out to do. She relocated to Hemet, California before finally making her last home in Hillsboro, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years James S. Lance, and her granddaughter Ashley. She was survived by her three children Jeff S. (Vickie) of Alpine, California; Janet S. Stephens (Zach) of Ramona, California; and Jay S. of Oregon. As well as four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. (Bio by Jay Lance)
