E. B. "Red" Etter, 92, of Chattanooga, died at his home Wednesday evening, February 8, 2006.

He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Coach Etter loved gospel music and organized a group called the Gloryland Singers which he managed for several years with the assistance of Nancy Teague.

He was born in McMinnville and moved to Chattanooga with his mother in the late '20s, after the death of his father. He remained here most of his life, except for a brief tenure as a teacher and coach in North Carolina shortly after he graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1936.

After moving to Chattanooga, he attended Central High School, graduating in 1932. He became the head football coach at Central in 1943 and coached there through 1969. While coaching at Central, at various times, he was head coach of football, baseball, track, boxing, and wrestling.

He became the head football coach at Baylor in 1970 and coached there through 1983. Coach Etter retired from teaching and coaching after the '83 season. In the classroom, he was an excellent teacher, teaching mathematics or Latin.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Gross Etter; sons, Gene Etter and his wife Eddie of Chattanooga, and Bob Etter of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren, Glenn Etter of California, Todd Etter and his wife Ann of Alexandria, VA, Dr. Lori Etter and husband Jeff Welty of North Carolina, Honey Hopkins and husband Jonathan of Charleston, SC, Jack Etter and Jordan Etter of Sacramento, CA; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Etter, Jeffrey Etter and Marshall Hopkins. In addition to Gene and Bob, he also raised his grandson, Glenn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Red Bank Baptist Church with Bill Harvey, Rev. Bert Jones and Dr. Glenn Morgan officiating.

Beginning at 2:15, there will be an opportunity to gather and recall memories of Coach Etter at the church before leaving for the cemetery. Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
