Hugh A. Davenport, Jr., a retired Portland police sergeant and real estate agent, died Saturday in a hospital in his hometown of Federal Way, Wash. He was 75. Mr. Davenport was born in Rockwell, Wash., and moved to Portland as a child. He lived in Portland for 50 years and graduated from Grant High School in 1930. He joined the Portland Police Bureau as a patrolman in 1936. From 1952 to 1962, Mr. Davenport commanded the Police Bureau's Sunshine Division, which gathers food and toys for underprivileged children He retired in 1962 as detective sergeant. From 1956 to 1970 he owned and operated Hugh Davenport Realty. He moved to Federal Way about eight Years ago. Mr. Davenport was a member of the Al Kader Shrine and was a Mason and a Jester. He was a member of Columbia River Yacht Club and Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Mr. Davenport's survivors include his wife, Gladys; daughter, Diana Hardin of Gresham; brother, Dean of Panama City, Fla.; and two grandsons. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Sunshine Division of the Portland Police Bureau. At Mr. Davenport's request, there will be no services, and interment will be private.
