"... Corp. Smith was struck by a machine gun bullet in the right side, the bullet struck a rib and glanced off, causing a severe wound from which he suffered a great loss of blood. However this did not stop him and with his squad he advanced. A short time afterwards, he was struck by shrapnel from a shell exploding near and the bone in his right arm between the shoulder and elbow was shattered..."

"Cornelius Smith
Cornelius (Neil) H. Smith, 86, of 1112 W 6th St., Rock Falls died in his home Tuesday morning.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wheelock Allen Funeral Home in Rock Falls with Rev. Paul R. Meltzer, pastor of the Rock Falls First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Sterling...
Mr. Smith was born on March 24, 1895 in Rock Falls, Illinois, the son of Louis and Hannah (Johnson) Smith. He was united in marriage to Christina Comstock on November 8, 1919 in Rock Falls. She preceded him in death on February 27, 1975. He was a veteran of World War I. He was a retired foreman of Sterling Multi-Products, Inc.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Minnie Brotheridge of Rock Falls. He was preceded by his parents, his wife, one son, Neil in 1941, three sisters and one brother."
