Otto was the son of Johan Adam Gleichmann and Fredericka Sphiler, both from Germany who arrived in New York on June 8, 1852 on the s/s Stephanie with his brother, Casper. Otto was a tailor and grocer who lived all of his life in Brooklyn as did most of his brothers.
