Ella's mother, Catherine Kittle Truax, married William Hemstreet on 3 June 1843. Mr. Hemstreet died 23 months after the marriage on 9 May 1845. Mrs. Hemstreet resumed using the last name of Truax. Their 11 month old child, Helen Ann, also took the last name of Truax. She was later called Ella.
