Scarritt was the son of Henry Eugene Ferrel and Louisa Scarritt. In the 1910 census he is living with his Scarritt grandparents and his mother as "Scarritt Ferrel". Louisa is listed as divorced. Louisa married Henry Coolidge Adams in 1912.

His official Navy bio lists his father as Henry C. Adams and this is correct because even though Adams was not his biological father, Henry C. Adams was his legal father by adoption. He was also known as Scarritt Scarritt for a short time.. Proof of this was a postcard from Penang written to" Scarritt Scarritt" by his mother on her around the world honeymoon with Adams in 1912-13.
