SALEM - Georgiana Chitiea Costa, 96, went home to be with her Lord, Friday morning, Dec. 4, 2015. She died peacefully and will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her strength, caring and faith.

Georgiana, the eldest of four children of the late Andre and Elisaveta Chitiea of Romania, was born in Salem on April 20, 1919. She was also the eldest of the first generation of children born to the Chitiea's extended immigrant family that included the Oana family and descendants of the Canja family.

Georgiana attended Columbia Street School, Salem Junior High and was a member of the Salem High School class of 1937. As a teenager, she became an apprentice to Eleanor Schelert, proprietor of Luvlee Foundations Corset Shop, sewing custom-made corsets for women with special medical needs. When Mrs. Schelert retired, Georgiana assumed the business, and ran the successful shop for decades.

She sewed countless miles of thread, creating and mending garments, curtains, and household items for her family and friends. An expert seamstress, Georgiana was also accomplished at knitting and crocheting.

In June of 1937, Georgiana married Nicholas Palasan Costa, also the eldest child of Romanian immigrants, Joseph and Susanna Costa of Depot Road. Georgiana and Nick raised their three children, Nicholas Jr., Beverly, and Timothy, in Salem, where Nick worked as a welder at Mullins Manufacturing. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1977, just months before Nick passed away.

A member of Salem's First Presbyterian Church since 1935, Georgiana was active in the February Women's Circle of the church and previously served as a deacon. Georgiana was a member of Church Women United of Salem and the Salem Historical Society. In 2010, she shared her family's Romanian artifacts and history for the Salem Historical Society's tribute to the Salem Romanian community and their numerous contributions to the city.

Family and friends will always remember Georgiana's love of sharing Romanian traditions, stories, poems, songs, and folk dances. She was an excellent cook. Family favorites included Romanian cabbage rolls (sarmale), chicken stew (tocana dui pui), vegetable rice pilaf (pilaf de orez cu legume), and cornmeal with cheese and sour cream (mamaliga cu branza si smantana). Her chiffon cakes twice won blue ribbons at the Canfield Fair.

Although Georgiana never lived further than three miles from the center of Salem, she traveled to Romania several times and numerous states to visit family members. She cherished her family relationships and friendships through participation in card clubs, "Birthday Ladies" and visiting shut-ins. Georgiana's guiding principle was "If you need my help, I'll be there for you."

Survivors include her children, Nicholas P. Costa Jr. and wife Amber of Redlands, Calif., Beverly Costa Bowman of Boardman, and Timothy S. Costa and wife Melissa of Salem; six grandchildren, Christopher Bowman of Boardman, Steven and Patsy Bowman of Polson, Mont., Jason and Christine Bowman of Boardman, Fred and Nicole Costa George of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jamie and Susan Costa Cortz of Redlands, and Nicholas L. Chitiea and wife Joan of Carlsbad, Calif.; sister Helen Chitiea Payne of Fairfax, Va.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas P. Costa Sr. in November of 1977; and brother Nicholas Chitiea.

A celebration of life service will be observed on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m., at the Salem First Presbyterian Church, 436 E. Second St., with the Rev. Meta Cramer officiating. The burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.

The Costa family would like to thank the staff of Blossom Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion for the past five years.
