He came from Segesberg, Holstein Germany and was a "Landmann", I guess a farmer.

He came to America a few years after his wife Johanna Margaret Steffen {nee Stoffers} died in Germany July 17th, 1883. He left Germany September 27th 1885 from Hamburg Germany
\

Father of at least Catherine Steffen {later Gens} Gens , Minnie Steffen and Louisa Sophia Steffen Lizbeth is the mother of Emma Schramm Gens. Catherine married Henry Gens, and Emma married William Gens. Henry and William were brothers, 2 of the 8 children of Crist and Augusta Gens. Translation, one of Andreas' daughter was Catherine. He had another child who had Emma, so Catherine and Emma were aunt and niece even though they married brothers. Whew!

When he was 56 years old, Andreas sailed on 27 Sept 1885 from Hamburg to New York on a ship called the Lessing of the "Hamburg-Amerika Linie". He sailed with a Cath E Steffen age 23 and Emma Scramm age. 9 .

I think it took a lot of bravery to immigrate when you were 56. I wish I knew what was going on.

In a 1900 census he was 70 years old and lived with his daughter Catherine and son- in- law Henry. He was still working as a house carpenter. He had been here 17 years but could not speak English.
He died the next year.
His daughter Minnie came over in 1906. My mother just once said cryptically we had relatives killed in the Holocaust and I think it was the family left behind.
