He enlisted in the US army on February 15, 1941 at Jefferson Barracks. During the war, Lester was captured by enemy Germans and held captive for 7 months. Lester spoke German fluently and was treated well. He also changed the spelling of his surname while serving in the military.
After returning home from the war, he married Verna Blandford and they lived in St. Louis. Lester and Verna had two children, Allen Lester and Darlene Ann.
A memorial plaque dedicated to him was placed on the Veterans Memorial wall in Perryville City Park in 2016
