Robert W. Stouffer Jr., a former teacher, coach and administrator in the Hazelwood School District, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2000) at a hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was 63 and lived in Reeds Spring, Mo.
Mr. Stouffer started his career in 1962 as a driver's education teacher at Hazelwood Central High School and later became varsity football coach. In 1972, his football team won a state co-championship, and subsequently played in title games in 1977 and 1978.
In 1979, he was appointed assistant principal and activities director at Hazelwood West High School, serving until he retired in 1989. He had also coached football at Hazelwood West from 1981 to 1983.
After retiring, he moved to Reeds Spring and coached part time at schools there and in Springfield.
A native of Roxana, Mr. Stouffer graduated from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University in Kirksville, and earned a master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. From 1958 to 1961, he served in the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of captain.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today at Bethany Peace United Church of Christ , 11952 Bellefontaine Road, Spanish Lake. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in Godfrey.
Among the survivors are his wife, Sally A. Stouffer; a son, Scott Stouffer of St. Peters; five daughters, Brenda Tracy of Galena, Mo., Cynthia Bruemmer of St. Charles, Patricia Padden of Lexington, Tenn., Kathleen Viviano of St. Peters and Margaret Hulse of Ozark, Mo.; a sister, Darlene Dycus of Bella Vista, Ark.; and 10 grandchildren.
