Nora was born to Edmond Buckner Hatch and Amanda Susan "Sue" Jarman Lewis . Nora's mother Sue was my father's grandmother, who was first married to my great-grandfather, Riley Thomas Lewis, who passed away of pneumonia in August of 1895, only three months before his youngest son Riley Gardner Lewis was born in November 1895. They also had an older son together, my grandfather, Richard Lee Lewis. Sue then remarried Mr Hatch, and their daughter Nora was born in Kinston. In the 1920 Census, Nora was living in Kinston with her parents while her father worked on the Cotton Mill. In the 1930 Census Nora moved with her parents and half brother Riley to New Bern where her father worked as a clerk in a grocery store.

My Dad's cousin tells me that Nora was never able to live alone, perhaps suffering from Downs Syndrome. She is listed as having married Ernest Vandiver Wood and divorcing. Then marrying Vaughn Allen Bedsworth on 7 Sep 1954. Her death certificate reads that her name is "Nora Hatch Bedsworth", but that she was "never married". It is thought that Mr. Bedsworth married her to become her guardian just before her mother died in 1955. She died of "mesenteric thrombosis", which is a ruputure of the abdominal artery.
