Nathan came from a family with at least eight children. He and his family moved from New Hampshire to Newberg, Wisconsin, when he was five years old. They moved to Union, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, before 1870. He is shown in the 1880 census for Union, living on his parents' farm with his first wife, Hannah Warren. Hannah died in 1884.

Nathan married Adda Chapin on the last day of 1885. The 1900 census shows them in Albemarle County, Virginia, with two daughters, Laura and Juanita. Nathan was a farmer. Nathan and his daughter Juanita were recorded in the 1920 census for Marathon County, Wisconsin, where Nathan was a farmer. It is not known why Adda was not with them. Adda died in her home near Aniwa in Shawano County in 1924. In 1930 Nathan was still farming, and his unmarried daughter Juanita was living with him in Marathon County.

Juanita married David Langner in about 1937. Nathan probably moved with Juanita and David to Shawano County, where Nathan died in 1939 at the age of 88.
