Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. His elementary education was completed at St. Alice and St. Cathage followed by high school graduation from West Catholic High School in Philadelphia in 1941. His interest in the priesthood became evident and in September of 1941 he entered the seminary in hopes of being ordained a priest. He studied at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania where he received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in history. On May 27, 1950 he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul and afterward was assigned to Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Philadelphia as assistant pastor. In late 1950 he began a postgraduate study at The Catholic University of American In Washington, DC and earned a licentiate in cannon law. After graduation he returned as assistant pastor at Out Lady of Pompeii. On September 2, 1952 he was appointed a professor at St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia, and he remained there for five years. In 1957 he became the founding principal at Notre Dame High School in Easton, Pennsylvania and remained at Notre Dame for four years. While at Notre Dame he initiated a social outlet for the kids and called it "American Bandstand". Famous entertainers who performed there included Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, Connie Francis, Fabian, The Four Aces, Annette Funicello, Herman Hermits, Brenda Lee and Bobby Rydell. In 1961 he was appointed first chancellor of the new diocese of Allenton, Pennsylvania and shortly afterwards first secretary to the Diocesan Consultors, and first Assistant Judicial Vicar to the Diocesan Tribunal. On October 11, 1966 he was appointed Vicar General and served as Vicar for twenty two years. Performing dual posts while Vicar General he became the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Allentown. While pastor he established the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in 1974. On February 20, 1975 he became the pastor of Allentown Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena and served as pastor until May 24, 1989. He became the eleventh Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina on February 22, 1990 serving until he retired on July 13, 1999.
