Marjorie Abell Sternberg, 92, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Helena from injuries sustained from a fall.

Marjorie was born in East Helena, Montana to Charles Kingsley Abell and Josephine Elizabeth Sanders Abell on June 23, 1921. She was the youngest of her six siblings. She attended Spokane Creek School through the seventh grade. At 13, she contacted polio and was treated in Billings and attended the St. Vincent Hospital School. At 15, she returned to Helena and graduated from Helena High in 1940. She met the love of her life and married Alfred Sternberg on September 21, 1940.

During the war years, she lived in Spokane, Washington while her husband served in the Army Air Corp. After the war, they returned to Helena to work and raise their family. Marjorie worked for Clover Leaf Dairy as a bookkeeper and retired in 1984. After retirement, she and her husband travelled in their fifth wheeler and enjoyed the company of the Good Sam Club. Marjorie especially enjoyed playing pinochle at the Senior Center and made many friends with that group. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Stan Sternberg (Debbie) and her son-in-law Jack Maier; four grandsons: Jay Maier (Nancy), Jerry Maier (Tina), Kyle Sternberg and Brad Sternberg (Allison); and four great-granddaughters: Savannah and Sydney Maier and Charlotte and Adalyn Maier. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, her daughter Myrna Maier, her parents and her brothers and sisters: Harriet Tucker, Ivan Abell, Stella Jordan, Miva Van Engen, Esther Lay and Archie Abell.

A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, 2231 E. Broadway, with a funeral service to follow the viewing at 11:00 a.m. at the church. A funeral reception will take place in the social hall at the church immediately following the funeral service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery following the reception at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Rotary Foundation, PolioPlus Fund, 14280 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, IL 60693 to help achieve a polio-free world.
