OBITUARY FOR QUANAH EDWARD COX

Quanah Edward Cox, 81, longtime Duncan, OK educator and coach, died on Monday July 16, 2012 at the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center, Lawton, OK.

A memorial service to celebrate his Father and Quanah's life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 19 at the First Christian Church of Duncan with the Rev Arnold Nelson officiating, assisted by the Rev Jennifer Steil and Stan Martin.

Services are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home of Duncan where the family will receive friends Wednesday 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Quanah was born May 28, 1931 in Duncan to Edward M and Thelma Wilkinson Cox. He married Mary Frances Winingham on Sept 7, 1950 in Duncan.

He was proud of his family, his heritage and the career he chose of educating and coaching. These things led him on a journey of opportunities to be taught and to teach. Quanah was a 1949 graduate of Duncan High School Class where he participated in track, football, baseball and basketball. He continued his education at The University of Oklahoma and earned his Masters of Education at East Central State University. He was an educator at Duncan Junior High for 22 years, an Assistant Principal for 8 years and Athletic Director for 10 years.

Coaching was his pride and joy and included many memorable games and practices. He coached two basketball teams while service in the United States Army 1954 to 1956 with the 548th Field Artillery Battalion. He also coached Duncan Youth Council baseball and track, Duncan High School track and Duncan Junior High School football, basketball and track.

Quanah was very honored when Joe Harper created and the DHS Quanah Cox Invitational in 2006. He was an elder and member of the Comanche Nation Tribe, a life member of the OU Foundation, OU Alumni Association, OU Track Club and Oklahoma Coaches Association, was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church and currently an active member of First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Cox of the home, his sister, Joan Darter, his children, Ed and D'Ann Cox, Katherine Rogers, Beth and Robert Cowan, all of Duncan, five grandchildren: Josh Rogers and wife Kendall of Shawnee, Carrie Smyser and husband Joe of Norman, Jessica Rice and husband Brad of Edmond, Chris Cowan of Berea, Ohio and Ryan Cox of Duncan, four great grandchildren: Avery Rice, Carson Rogers, Sam Smyser and Lyla Rogers and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Ralph Darter and any other family members he loved and respected.
