He was the son of William Hairgrove (1800-1872) and Sarah A. Johns[t]on (1802-1877). Most of the records for John Adams Hairgrove say he was born in the state of Mississippi.
John first married Seela G. Wood on 13 January 1853, Sangamon County, Illinois. After Seela died in 1899, John married again at the age of 70, to Ann Elizabeth Pearson on 28 February 1901, Labette County, Kansas.
