Eloise Bowden

Eloise Bowden, a longtime North Fork resident, died July 6 at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport. She was 93 and had resided at San Simeon since 1996.

Ms. Bowden was born in New York City on Feb. 12, 1909, to Theron and Mary (Gowan) Worth. She came to the North Fork with her family at an early age and settled in New Suffolk. Later she married and raised her family in Greenport and New Suffolk. She had been a legal secretary for over 30 years with the Town of Southold.

"She was one of the funniest humans on earth," said her granddaughter-in-law, Peggy Kolbenheyer of Mattituck, who collected and wrote down some of Ms. Bowden's favorite sayings. She used to say, "Out of all my relatives, I like myself the best," "Oh, to be 65 again" and "If you don't like my driving, stay off the sidewalk." Asked once at San Simeon where she would like a back rub, she replied that she would prefer a front rub.

She is survived by stepsons Clyde Bowden of Georgia and Jimmy Bowden of Riverhead, as well as two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester, son Glenn Bradley, one stepson and a great-grandson.
Visiting hours were July 8 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Mattituck, where parish prayer services were conducted by Deacon Jack Bopp. The Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was held July 9 at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Cutchogue by Father Peter Allen; burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
