Edward A. Schmit, 88, of Fort Branch, passed away November 29, 2013, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, Ind. He was born in Gibson County, Ind., on February 24, 1925 and resided his lifetime in Gibson County. He retired from Whirlpool in June 1989.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary Frances (Robinson) Schmit, in October 2005. He is survived by two sisters, Virginia Kleinberg, living in Covington, Tenn., and Patricia Julian, living in Evansville, Ind. He has one son, Mark, living in Gallatin, Tenn., and two grandsons, Cody, living in Indianapolis, Ind, and Cale, living in Clarksville, Tenn.; and a great-grandson Lucas.
He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Fort Branch, American Legion Post #194 in Haubstadt, Ind., and a lifetime member on VFW Post #2714. He was a Fort Branch Little League manager for several years and also served as President of the League for one year. He served as treasurer of the Fort Branch Optimist Club during its existence in Fort Branch. He served as Quarter Master of the VFW Post #2714 for five years. During the five years as Quarter Master he attained the status as All State Quarter Master three of those years. He served as Union Township Trustee for 16 years and resigned the position due to health problems. During this time of service as Township Trustee he attained an ambulance location in Fort Branch and another fire station for the Union Township, Fort Branch Fire Department.
Services for Ed will be Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Father Tony Ernst and Father Brian Emmick officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery with Military Services graveside by the VFW Post #2714 and American Legion Post #194. Visitation will be Monday, December 2, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Stodghill Funeral Home in Fort Branch, Ind. Donations may be made to the Holy Cross School or Holy Cross Church. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.stodghillfuneralhome.com
