Per obituaries:
"Willis Mayhew, 42 of 1315 Avenue I, a machinist helper in the back shops of Santa Fe, died suddenly about 1:55 p.m. today while at work. It is believed he was the victim of a heart attack.
Fellow employees noticed Mayhew collapse and summoned aid. The city fire department was notified and went to the scene with a pulmotor but all efforts to revive Mayhew failed. An ambulance was called and he was taken to the Santa Fe hospital. A doctor there said the man was dead when the ambulance arrived.
He had been employed by the Santa Fe since December 1942."
"Funeral services for Willis Jefferson Mayhew 42 of 1309 Avenue I , who died suddenly Tuesday afternoon will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Clements Chapel with the Rev. Chester Hensley, pastor of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
He was born May 22, 1901, at Agency, Iowa and has been a resident of Fort Madison for ... married at Keokuk Nov. 21, 1921 to Juanita B. Knipe who survives. He is also survived by several cousins. He attended Sunday School at the First Christian Church and was employed as a machinist helper in A.T.& S.F. shops."
