John M. Beickert enlisted at age 20 at Jamaica, NY, under the name Matthew Baker to serve one year as a Private in Company A, 142nd NY Infantry regiment. He was mustered into the unit on Sep 14, 1864. He was absent from his unit, sick at hospital, Fort Monroe, VA, from Oct 27, 1864 until his company mustered out of service in June, 1865. He filed for and recieved a military pension starting Apr 1879. He was buried on May 25, 1879. After his death, the pension went to his widow.
