J. Conrad Kohlmann was the son of Conrad and Anna Weiss Kohlmann. Conrad was the brother of Annetta Kohlmann Oeth. Born in Dubuque, he graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1944.

Conrad then served for two years in the U.S. Army - stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. After returning home, he attended the University of Dubuque, and graduted in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. In 1968 he received a Master's Degree in education from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville.

In 1950 he began teaching - his teaching career would span 42 years. He taught in Applington and Postville, then spent 14 years teaching at Washington Jr. High in Dubuque. In 1969 when Hempstead High School was opened in Dubuque he began teaching mathematics there. Conrad was named the chair of the math department in 1971, and would remain at Hempstead until his retirement in 1992.

Conrad was an active member of the Grand View United Methodist Church, the Dubuque Downtown Kiwanis Club, and was a life member of the Dubuque American Legion Post 6.

On Dec. 20, 1958 Conrad married Patricia Brauhn, who also taught in the Dubuque schools, she preceeded him in death. They had three chidlren, Conrad, Cindy, and Chris.
