SHAFTSBURY Mary F. Skidmore, 85, beloved wife of Kenneth Skidmore, died at home in Shaftsbury, Vt. on Monday, December 2, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born in East Arlington to the late Hallie (Hall) and Hosie Sargood on April 14, 1928.
Mary attended the Arlington schools. She met Ken at the ice skating pond in Arlington 69 years ago and they were married on June 26, 1948. Mary was employed at Bennington College, Union Carbide Corporation, Hale Company and retired from Stanley Tools in 1990 after 18 years. She also operated a day care from her home and provided meals and a place to stay for those she knew needed it. She and Ken farmed in East Hebron, N.Y. and, in 1955, moved to a farm in Granger Hollow where they have remained for the past 58 years. Mary was a member of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was an avid volunteer for the Senior Center, Meals Program and RSVP. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and flower arranging, but her greatest joy was her home and family. Many grandchildren sat in the rocking chair with "Nana" while she read them stories. Mary attended BPI for the past several years.
Mary is survived by Ken, her husband of 65 years, and her children, Gayle Adams, Gary Skidmore Sr., Linda (Dale) Campbell, Kathy (Noel) Cardiff and Kendy Skidmore (Tony Sausville); 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Jerome Sargood, and a grandson, Dominick Carangio, Jr.
The funeral will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
