Civil War
Company D, 23rd OVI

William R. Boon (AKA Boone) enlisted in Company D, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, May 20, 1861 for a 3-year term of service. He became ill at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio in mid-July 1861 and remained in the hospital there when the 23rd left for Virginia. He joined his company at Sutton, Virginia but was still unfit for duty which led to his discharge on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability, September 30, 1861. He returned home to Fredericksburg where he died November 14, 1861. Cause of death was listed as phthises, commonly caused by tuberculosis. Although the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census listings show him residing with his parents and siblings in Holmes County Ohio it is uncertain why his name appeared on the monument in Lorain County, and then died and was buried in Wayne County.
