Walter J. was the son of Patrick McNamara and Mary Sullivan McNamara.

Rosie Kelly told me that he was too old to get in the service in WW2 but he lied about his age, pretended to be younger and got in away. I found a WWI registration card that said he was born in 1899 but his headstone says he was born in 1900. And the WWI card says his middle name is Morris! But it has to be him since it says he lived at 1507 Orchlee. ( His WWII army paper corrected his age in red ink and said he was born April 22nd,1899! That document is posted here too. Confusing mystery!) His three older brothers had all served in WW1. He served as a Private in the Medical Department of Camp Gordon, Georgia in World War 2 from September 7th 1942 to April 9th, 1943. He had an honorable discharge, I don't know why so early. Perhaps his mother needed him. Maybe they found out how old he was, I don't know

He had brothers Francis, Edward, Lawrence, and sister Rose.In the 1920 census he and all the sibs are still living at home. His dad Patrick is 57 while Walt is only 20. Walter is working as an agent for magazines,. In a 1929 directory he is still at Orchlee and employed at Frick Park. Dad had passed away but his mother and Rose are still there. Later he drove a bus for a living, (as would his nephew Frank.) He never married.

He was only 52 when he died. He last lived at 24 North Sprague Ave, Bellevue PA. He got sick on Christmas Day, 1952, and was ill for a month before he died of a coronary occlusion. There was a Solemn Requiem Mass for him at Assumption Church. He was survived at that point only by his sister Rose D. McNamara Focer and his brother Richard Lawrence, his brothers Edward and Francis having already died. his parents had died a long time ago. His nephew Robert Louis McNamara signed his Death Certificate.

Walter rests with his parents, his sister Rose and his brother Billy. Nearby is his brothers Edward and Francis J. McNamara.

It could be the army found out about his true age when they were asked to buy his headstone. It had to have the correct dates. On his application for a headstone the army did write a correction in red ink making him a year older than he had originally stated.

Infant Lawrence J Kelly is buried in Walter's grave too. The baby was the grandson of his brother Richard Lawrence McNamara, child of Rosie McNamara Kelly, and only lived one day. His page is Find A Grave Memorial# 149770332.

I think you were a good man, Walter. I'm sure of it. You were a good choice to take care of the baby.
