Longtime resident of Salisbury Center, NY, Tom was killed after being struck by a motor vehicle near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Tom and his family were returning from a Civil War reenactment in Cedar Creek, Virginia.

Tom's military career spanned 35 years starting with the Korean War in 1953. He and his sons were longtime Civil War reenactors with the 9th Battalion Middlesex Light Artillery; a Confederate unit.

Tom was the son of John and Bertha (Burger) Rathbun, he was married to Mary Gifford at Little Falls, NY on August 2, 1952, they had 6 children and 10 grandchildren.

He was buried with full military honors on October 21, 2005.
