From a 1908 Nance County Nebraska newspaper clipping file, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Word was sent here Tuesday that John F. Griffin, of Grand Junction, Colorado, had passed away from his vale of tears to his reward on Monday afternoon. The remains, accompanied by Mrs. Griffin and daughter Miss Ollie, and Mrs. N. G.
Griffin, arrived Thursday morning and taken to the Methodist church, of which he was a member, where they laid in state until 2:30 p.m. when the sermon was preached by the pastor, Rev. Chas. P. Lang, to a large circle of friends and relatives. The casket was covered with the most beautiful display of flowers we have ever seen in St. Edwards. Immediately after the services at the church the
Kinsman post of the G.A.R. took charge and escorted the bier to the Skeedee cemetery where his dearest neighbors, friends and relatives gathered to witness the beautiful ritual work of the G.A.R.
Thus has passed away a kind father, a faithful husband, and a loving friend, which can be testified by hundreds who
have been helped in time of need. As a member of the Methodist church, he lived a consistent Christian life at all times. Always pleasant and jovial he made
friends with everyone he met, who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the loved ones in this dark hour.

John Fisher Griffin was born in Park county, Indiana, November 14, 1843 and died in Grand Junction, Colorado July 13, 1908, aged 64 years, 7 months and 29 days.
When a small boy his parents moved to Warren county, Iowa, where in 1861, he answered the call to arms of President Lincoln, joining Company G Third infantry, serving over three years.

In August 1865 he married Miss Eliza E. Moore. To this union there were seven children: Benjamin F., deceased; Wm. H. of Texas; Samuel S., deceased; L. D. of Des Moines, Iowa; Ernest E., deceased; Mrs. Lola E. Rapp of St. Edward; and Ollie A. of Grand Junction, Colorado.

In 1884 he moved with his family to the Skeedee and in February 1903 built a fine residence in St. Edward, where he lived until March 1906, when he went to Grand Junction, Colorado for his daughter's, Miss Ollie, health, who has been benefited greatly by the climate out there.

On December 11, 1889 his wife died and is buried with her three sons in the Skeedee cemetery.

Nine years later, on March 1, 1898, Mr. Griffin married Miss Mary Elizabeth Davies, who survives him. He has been in poor health for many years, but not serious until four weeks ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy.

He is survived by five brothers and one sister, all were present except Nels G. and the sister, who was unable to be present at the funeral: William, of Milo, Iowa; N. G., of Grand Junction, Colorado; H. V. of Des Moines, Iowa; B. F. of Tekamah; E. A. of Bancroft; and Mrs. Jas Myers of Fulton, South Dakota.

Those present from abroad to the funeral were L. D. Griffin and wife of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Nels Griffin of Grand Junction, Colorado; A. C. Loucks and wife, and J. C. Read of Monroe; and Mr. Davies and wife, of Genoa. - St. E. Sun
