William was the son of William H. and Elizabeth Maxwell Elston and was born in Henry County, KY. His siblings included: Neta Jane, Thomas M., Matilda B., Allen, Jasper Joseph, Levi Scott, Elizabeth and John.
On September 20, 1834 he married Mary Oliver in Henry County, KY. It was here that nine of their ten children were born including: Martha Elizabeth, Fannie A., Thomas A., Rubin, Robert P., Apphia Catherine, Gail Babe, William Alfred, and Ella Precious.
After migrating to Knox County, Missouri, their last child, Posey True, was born.
