Mary A. Flood married William Neely. The story I was told was that she was the cleaning girl for the Neely's and it was a huge scandal and I think a mixed marriage (Catholic and Protestant) causing a rift in the families.

Mary was a suffragette, a political character with influence, strong-minded and very smart. People came to Mary Neely asking for political favors. They kept a special room in the house on Sherman Ave to give food away to the needy who came by. A lot of her good qualities traveled down the generations to her daughter Jane C. and granddaughter Jane E.

Her father James and mother Jane Flood were born in Ireland. James was a POW in the Civil War, I think. (They are buried in the plot beside her, H-195. I think she brought them over from St Mary's cemetery )

Mary last lived at 116 Sherman Ave in Pittsburgh PA, and had her funeral at Devlin's who were friends of the family. (I found out the Devlin family managed St Mary's cemetery earlier, so it ran in the family.)

Mary and husband William had 5 children.

I'm not sure of her birth year. 1867 was on somebody's family tree, but Amber B. was kind enough to take a volunteer photo that says she was born in 1862. I notice on the death certificate her husband did not know her birthday or how old she was. I wonder if it was a secret.

Mary died on an Monday night at about age 74 from Influenza, with which she had been ill 9 days. She died at home at 10:30 PM from what the coroner called "sudden dilation of the heart" , perhaps congestive heart failure.

They had the funeral from her home on Friday morning, followed by a Requiem High Mass at St Peter's Church at 9:30 AM

Her obituary from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Page 31, December 16th, 1936. NEELY - On Monday, December 14th 1936 at 10:35 PM Mary A. Neely (nee Flood) beloved wife of William F. Neely and mother of Frank J, Edwin J. Herbert, Jane McNamara and Walter J. Neely.

her twin great great grandsons rest with her in this same grave. The little boys were stillborn at 5 and 1/2 months gestation and are referred to in cemetery records as "Babies Neely" buried Sept 7th 1944.They are the sons of John Maxwell and Ruth Purcell Neely.

(Her sister r Jennie Flood King is in Calvary too (132771266) but so far the manager hasn't answered me )
