He and Leslie were married in July 1968. Some months later, David was shipped overseas and served in Vietnam as an Intelligence Officer where he earned a Bronze Star in addition to other commendations. Upon return from his 1968-1969 deployment, David was assigned to various military bases in the US while he and his wife raised their family of two sons and a daughter.
The young officer was promoted and continued his career with a series of Intelligence assignments. Eventually, Captain Shaughnessy was ordered to Fort Monroe, Virginia, and while stationed at the famous Hampton Roads facility in the mid 1970s, the Army was forced to exercise a "post war reduction in force." Suddenly, the decorated "Captain" Shaughnessy became "Mr." Shaughnessy. However, due to his value as a member of Military Intelligence, David was immediately hired by the Army and continued to serve as a civilian Intelligence Analyst. He remained at Fort Monroe rising to Senior Intelligence Analyst and served until his retirement in January 2008.
David was an avid reader, a master chess player, a classical music aficionado, a patron of children's charities, and had a passion for protecting wolves in the wild.
In July 2008, while they celebrated forty years of marriage in the scenic foothills of Virginia's Shenandoah Mountains, David and Leslie renewed their vows surrounded by their grown children, grand children and family.
Sadly, a few months later, after the sudden onset of illness, David passed away.
He is missed by all. May he Rest in Peace.
