Charles R. 'Pappy' Owen, 63, 5400 W. 25th, died in a Topeka hospital Friday following an extended illness. He had cancer.

He was born March 4, 1915, in Abilene and lived most of his life in Topeka. He was a captain in the Topeka Fire Department, retiring April 15, 1965, after 28 years of service.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral, Moose Lodge No. 555 and Firefighters Local No. 83.

He was married Dec. 5, 1952, to Maxine Brown. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Clarence W. McKay, Jr., Lawson, Mo., and Ronald W. McKay, Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Mrs. Judith C. Berlin, Leawood; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Rowe, 2919 Sunset, Mrs. Ruth Johnson, Houston, Mrs. Verna Roy, Joplin, Mo., and Mrs. Dorothy Colcher, Wichita; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Owen will lie in state at the funeral home from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday, after which the casket will remained closed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Episcopal Cathedral building fund, 701 W. 8th, Topeka, 66604; or the American Cancer Society, 3003 Van Buren, Topeka, 66611.
