Married Jane Morrison February 28, 1860 in Brockwayville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.

Joined Presbyterian Church as a young man, later joined the Methodist Church at Aulne, Kansas.

In the 1870 Federal Census the family was listed in the West Ward of the city of Paola in Miami County, Kansas. His occupation was listed as "house carpenter". He then moved with his family in 1871 as pioneer to Marion County. His land Grant was signed by Pres. R.B. Hayes 1 Oct 1877.

Homestead Cert. #2669, Appl. #10838, Vol. 6, Pg 307 (Registered at the Land Office in Salina, KS.) South 1/2 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 32 Township 20 south; Range 3 East. The certificate is dated October 1, 1877. The final receiver's Receipt # 2669 was dated March 26, 1877 was filed in Marion County, Kansas on April 2, 1877. He filed the homestead certificate in Marion County on April 24, 1879.

After John and Jane passed away the proptery was handled by Anna O. & John A. Ewert. They sold one half of their 2/3 interest to Albert E. Welsh of Kay County, Oklahoma on March 23, 1923. He and his wife Martha sold it back to Annie on March 7, 1924 for $2,500. At that time Albert lived in Idaho. Then on March 26, 1928, Annie & John and Jennie & Louis King finally sold the property to Christian Seibel of Marion County, Kansas for $6,800.
