Arriving in Vietnam, Mack was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, USARV.
Mack was killed in of Operation Cocoa Beach, during a ferocious firefight involving personnel from the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. Firefight resulted in the deaths of 15 US Army soldiers, 1 Medal of Honor recipient and 2 recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. It also resulted in the deaths of 199 Viet Cong troops.
