During the Civil War, David served as a Surgeon with the 4th New Hampshire Infantry from September 18, 1861, until November 1864 or August 23, 1865 (dependnding on source). In January 1865 he moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, where he became a member of the Vermont Homeopathic Medial Society.

David and Harriet White married in 1865. Their children include Nathaniel, who died in infancy, Harriet (married Lincoln J Daniels) and Minnie (Mary Ann) Dearborn Taylor.

The St Johnsbury Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) April 05, 1888: "Dr. D.P. Dearborn, aged 50, a prominent homeopathis physician of Brattleboro, died on Monday. From 1862 to 1865 he was surgeon of the 4th New Hampshire regiment. He married Harriett, the daughter of the late Nathaniel White of Concord, N.H., who survives him witih three children."
